Character History:

James' life started out rocky, with constant fighting between his mother and father. She hadn't wanted to leave England. He had thought it was the only choice. He often found himself caught in the middle of the familial struggles, and when it came to blows, he would run away into the back yard, as far away as the fence would allow him. He'd pretend to speak to the animals who would come and listen to him, and he would pretend he could hear them speaking back. At such a young age, it was just a game -- wishful thinking to still a troubled child's fears.

The bombs fell when he was five, and for a long time, while at first they hid from the radiation in a shelter, and then when they traveled to find safer pastures, there was noplace to hide. He became the object of the shoving and hitting, at least by his mother. His father would often send him on errands, such as fetching wood for the fire or water for cooking and washing. Being only six, he wasn't exactly excited about the chores, but he went about them willingly, glad to get away from Mum's abuse.

It was during one of his outings that he heard the warnings of a muskrat, that there was a snake in on the path he was taking, that he realized the animals really were talking to him. This was just the clearest voice he'd ever heard. This muskrat told him to not be silly, that of course they were talking to him, that he, of course, simply had needed to learn how to listen.

He confided in his father when he got back to camp, and while his mother was making her evening restitutions. His father shared a long-held secret: He could talk to animals as well, as had his ancestors, ever since World War II. Unfortunatly, his father died when James was 12, and he has always suspected foul play, by his mother, as they were both found in bed, shot.

Ever since then, James has been travelling by himself, using the animals' wisdom to keep himself safe.
